British woman in IS fight: 'My life has a purpose'

The first known British woman involved in the fight against the so-called Islamic State group in Syria says her life has taken on a purpose.

Kimberley "Kimmie" Taylor, from Blackburn, joined the Kurdish women's fighting force the YPJ in March last year.

Since then she has been involved in battles for the IS stronghold of Raqqa.

The YPJ is also in conflict with Turkish armed forces and is considered a terror group by the authorities in Ankara, although not by the UK.

Ms Taylor told the BBC the YPJ was involved in a battle for democracy, adding it was "giving her a life that is purposeful... I can see myself staying here for a long time".
