Avon New Cut is wildlife oasis in heart of Bristol

New Cut in the heart of urban Bristol is vying to become one of the city's newest nature reserves.

For many years, this Bristolian backwater was largely forgotten, but the Friends of Avon New Cut are hoping it will receive status as a local nature reserve.

This man-made water channel stretches for three miles and provides a perfect habitat for butterflies, birds and bugs.

Presenter Mike Dilger discovers some of its urban wildlife and explores what it offers to the thousands of commuters who cycle, walk and drive along it on their way to work.

He spoke to Ben Barker, from Friends of the Avon New Cut, and Susan Acton-Campbell, from Friends of Troopers Hill.

Urban Jungle is broadcast on Thursday, 1 August at 19:00 BST on BBC One West and nationwide on the iPlayer for seven days thereafter.
