Increase in A&E ambulance pick-ups for elderly

There has been a big increase in the number of elderly people being taken to accident and emergency departments by ambulance in the East Midlands - putting pressure on hospital resources.

Over the past three years, ambulance admissions for those aged over 90 have gone up by 56%, while the figure for over 70s has seen a rise of 28%, according to figures from the Health and Social Care Information Centre.

Abdul Jabbar, head of the emergency department at Nottingham's Queen Medical Centre, said more social care in the community is needed to address the problem.
