Capability Brown's unrealised vision for Cambridge revealed

Historic documents have uncovered landscape gardener Capability Brown's unrealised design for the landscape around Cambridge's historic colleges.

In the 1770s the chancellor of Cambridge University invited Brown to design some alterations to the famous area behind the colleges, known as 'The Backs'.

Brown proposed a parkland landscape with a lake and gentle curves, which is a world away from today's landscape.

Although the plans were never realised, they provide an insight into Capability Brown's vision for a very different-looking Cambridge.

Presenter Bunny Guinness discovers how Capability Brown's Cambridge would have looked had his vision been carried through.

Capability Brown's Unfinished Garden is broadcast on Monday, 3 October at 21:00 BST on BBC Four and on the iPlayer for 30 days thereafter.
