Weight loss surgery is on the rise in the West Midlands

The number of people having surgery to help them lose weight is on the increase in the West Midlands.

A freedom of information request by the BBC shows more than 3,000 procedures were carried out by the NHS in the region in the last five years - about 13 a week.

The operations are done at seven hospitals across the region.

Martin Wadley, a bariatric surgeon at the Worcestershire Royal Hospital, says more weight-loss operations should be offered on the NHS, because it could actually save the health service money in the future.
