Could coalmining return to west Cumbria?

Almost £15m is to be spent investigating whether coalmining can be brought back to the west Cumbrian coastline.

Whitehaven's Haig Pit closed in 1986 with the loss of 3,500 jobs.

Now the West Cumbria Mining Company is funding a study to examine whether coking coal could be extracted close to the site.
