BBC archive video shows Southampton celebrate city status in 1964

Video from the BBC South archives show how Southampton celebrated being granted city status in 1964.

Celebrations are taking place to mark 60 years of the south-coast city, which was first granted city status by a royal charter on 24 February 1964.

Events are being held across the city - and all vessels in the port have been asked to sound their whistles at midday to mark the occasion on Saturday.

The video from a news report shows the mayor of Southampton and other dignitaries, and the cruise ship Antigua in dock.
