Abbeystead disaster: 'What on earth caused this blast?'

Thirty years ago a party of residents from a Lancashire village were being shown around an underground water pumping station when a massive explosion destroyed the complex.

Sixteen of the 44-strong party died as a result of the disaster the Abbeystead plant, many from the village of St Michael's On Wyre.

The memories are vivid for members of the emergency services who attended the scene of the tragedy.
