Tributes to war veteran after Facebook appeal

Hundreds of people attended a war veteran's funeral in Stockport after his nephew's appeal went viral on Facebook.

Tom Bryan, who fought the Japanese in Burma during World War Two, lived a quiet life and died at the age of 92 at the end of October.

His nephew, Tony Budgett, thought his family would be the only mourners at the funeral and asked the public to pay tributes to "this loyal servant of Crown and Country".

Shirley George, from the British Humanist Association, said it was "a great feeling" to see so many people at the funeral - up to 400 attended.

"It shows you people's feelings, people's dedication and devotion to our war heroes."
