Lorry engulfed by blaze in Dereham

The moment flames engulfed a lorry in Norfolk has been captured on film.

The blaze happened as the agricultural HGV came off the A47 and headed into Dereham on Thursday, Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service said.

An explosion could be heard as a tyre popped, which made the blaze more "difficult" to tackle for the firefighters who arrived in four engines, said the fire service's operational support officer Emyr Gough.

The driver, who was unhurt, managed to call the emergency services just before 13:50 GMT and plumes of black smoke rose high into the sky.

Mr Gough said: "The driver was aware the trailer was on fire, so he stopped."

The lorry was carrying 1,000 litres of diesel and Mr Gough said the situation could have been an "awful lot worse" if the situation had not been contained.

Police officers also attended the blaze, which forced the closure of the A47 Dereham exit slip road.
