Battle for Monte Cassino: Newark veteran to return to scene

A 95-year-old Nottinghamshire army veteran has been preparing to return to the scene of a major World War Two battle for the first time in 70 years.

Lewis Renshaw, from Newark, was almost 26 when he was severely injured at the Battle of Monte Cassino in Italy in 1944.

It took four months to dislodge the German forces, with a total of 75,000 soldiers being injured or killed.

A film about the battle, which was one of the most bitterly-fought land campaigns of World War II has been made to coincide with the 70th anniversary on Monday.
