George Elmy lifeboat returns to Seaham after 51 years

A lifeboat involved in a maritime disaster in which nine people died, has returned to its County Durham port 51 years later, after being found for sale on the internet.

The George Elmy capsized during a rescue in huge seas off Seaham in November 1962, claiming the lives of five volunteer crew members and four of five fishermen who had just been rescued.

The lifeboat was removed from Seaham by the RNLI after the tragedy and was thought to have disappeared.

But in 2009 the vessel was spotted for sale and eventually purchased by the East Durham Heritage Group.

Following a lengthy restoration, a flotilla of lifeboats welcomed the vessel back into Seaham harbour.
