Vince Cable 'may abstain from vote on tuition fees'

Business Secretary Vince Cable has told the BBC he may abstain in the vote on university tuition fees, if his colleagues do too.

Mr Cable, a senior Lib Dem whose party had opposed raising tuition fees before the election, is now the minister responsible for universities.

He told the BBC that although his "instinct" was to vote in favour of the rise, the party wanted to "work as a team" on the issue.

Lib Dems agreed an abstention clause on fees as part of the coalition agreement.

Students are holding a third day of rallies in London and across the UK in protest against the planned changes.
