Cameron: "I want to give the motorist a fair deal"

The Prime Minister David Cameron has promised to look at rising petrol costs and said he hoped "progress" could be made on the issue.

At his latest PM Direct event at the headquarters of Greggs in Newcastle, he was asked by a member of staff what the government was going to do about fuel costs which have reached a record high.

Average prices at the pump are now around 127p per litre and the Retail Motor Industry Federation has written to the Chancellor asking him to scrap the planned fuel duty increase, due in April.

Mr Cameron said he wanted "to give the motorist a fair deal" and hoped the government would be able to announce "some progress" in the budget in March.
