Fortnightly bin collections help recycling claims LGA
The vice-chairman of the Local Government Association said the idea of weekly bin collections in England was "dead and finished" after a government announcement.
Liberal Democrat councillor Richard Kemp said fortnightly collections helped improve recycling rates and that returning to weekly emptying would cost an extra £200m annually.
Matthew Sinclair of the TaxPayers' Alliance claimed the EU was imposing "draconian policies", and the UK had enough holes in the ground to support weekly collections.
Neither Communities Secretary Eric Pickles or Environment Secretary Caroline Spelman were available to explain why the new waste strategy would force English councils to provide weekly collections.
