Border controls: Migration Watch on Theresa May actions
A former British ambassador recalled his time as an immigration official in the 1970s and said he was "pretty sure" staff would have used common sense and not allowed people into the UK if there were suspicions.
Alp Mehmet, vice chairman of Migration Watch, said: "I am not sure that this is as much of a problem as is being made out. "
He spoke as Downing Street defended the home secretary's decision to pilot the relaxation of border controls for EU nationals, but Theresa May said senior staff went further and scaled back checks on other passengers.
