Ken Clarke criticises France over veto of Euro treaty

Prime Minister David Cameron has explained to the House of Commons why he vetoed changes to European finance rules last week in Brussels.

Mr Cameron said he had asked for "safeguards" to protect the UK's financial sector, which were not forthcoming.

Justice Secretary Ken Clarke said other countries, including France, had not been prepared to compromise, while the British were ''trying to be supportive and helpful''.
