The defence secretary "absolutely rejects" the idea the UK's involvement in Afghanistan was a pointless war.

Philip Hammond told Andrew Neil the UK was building up "substantial competent Afghan national security forces" as he addressed the Taliban infiltrating the Afghan services.

He spoke 24 hours after the news that six British soldiers were killed by the Taliban, taking the total of UK military personnel who have died in Afghanistan since 2001 to 404.

He later spoke about why the UK would not arm rebels in Syria.
