Businesses urged to pay employees 'living wage'

Businesses are being urged to pay employees at least £1 per hour more than the minimum wage in a bid to lift those on the lowest pay out of poverty.

The Living Wage is a voluntary scheme employers can choose to sign up to, and it is intended to provide what campaigners say is an adequate standard of living.

But unlike the national minimum wage it is not compulsory.
