Police pay: Nick Herbert on lower PC starting salary
A former policing minister said the proposed lower starting rate for new police officers came from an independent review, and it would not affect officers already in post.
Nick Herbert said it meant new officers would be paid for their skills, rather than their length of service, and overall officers "would not lose very much" over their career.
Home Secretary Theresa May has confirmed the starting salary for police constables is being cut by £4,000 to £19,000.
