Vince Cable said he was not "hoping or planning to be the leader" of the Liberal Democrats when asked if Nick Clegg was safe in the job after the Eastleigh by-election result.

He told Andrew Neil that "nobody is questioning his leadership at all", and the business secretary said that leading the party was "not something I am hoping or aspiring or competing to do."
