MPs and ministers booed and heckled at conferences

Ministers and leading figures can face a hostile crowd at conferences, with the abuse then relayed over the TV and internet.

The Police Federation's annual conference opens in Bournemouth on Tuesday, and previous events have seen Theresa May and Jack Straw on the receiving end of police heckles.

Times columnist Matthew Parris said it was better to be booed then ignored, and a hostile reaction could be seen as a feather in the cap for the figure who is heckled.

Psychotherapist Lucy Beresford looked at the best way for a bruised politician to deal with the reaction, saying they should never get angry, after they watched a collection of potentially-humiliating scenes for leading figures.
