William Hague: 'EU lacks legitimacy'
The European Union "lacks democratic legitimacy" because many of its UK supporters "have been afraid of asking what the British people think of it", the foreign secretary has said.
William Hague told MPs debating plans for a referendum that public opinion was "disillusioned".
Conservative MP James Wharton, whose bill proposes a vote by 2017, said he was "speaking for millions of people" in the country.
