EU Referendum: Labour MP John Cryer backs Europe vote

A Labour MP has called for a referendum on Europe as soon as possible, claiming the "divide between Parliament and people was unsustainable".

John Cryer said "it was about time people did have a say" and there was a growing number of Labour MPs and supporters who wanted a vote on Britain's future in or out of Europe.

But he plans to abstain on the Tory bid for a referendum, with a vote in Parliament on Friday, saying it was "a con" and he doubted the prime minister would be able to get many powers back from Brussels.

Mr Cryer said his own party should be calling for an earlier referendum, and reckoned Labour "will change its position at some point".
