'We've had to make tough decisions' says Hammond

Defence Secretary Philip Hammond has said the government has made 'tough decisions' on defence cuts but the UK is still a 'credible and capable' military force.

Responding to criticism from generals and former US defence secretary Robert Gates that cuts to the UK's military budget had diminished its influence on the global stage, Mr Hammond said Britain was still a "credible, capable and reliable ally" to the US.

Speaking on The Andrew Marr Show, he also said that Britain would honour its commitments to NATO allies and would be taking part in exercises in the Baltic states in response to the the situation in Ukraine.
