Government must 'rethink' defence spending

Nato is poorly prepared for an attack on a member state from Russia, the Defence Select Committee has warned.

Its chair Rory Stewart MP told the Today programme the British government must "rethink" its defence spending.

He said it had failed to make a firm commitment to spending 2% of UK GDP on defence, despite advising other countries to reach this mark.

But Defence Secretary Michael Fallon explained the government had made "long-term" investments to counter any potential threat from Russia on Nato member states.
