Lib Dems conference: Protest votes and by-elections
The Liberal Democrats used to have a good record at winning by-elections, which saw Simon Hughes first elected in Southwark and Sarah Teather in Brent.
Now in government, it is no longer seen as the the party of protest, with UKIP taking a few second places and the Lib Dems often failing to keep their deposits in recent years.
