Ed Miliband scorns Tory result in Clacton by-election

The Labour leader Ed Miliband says he will show no complacency after his party scraped to victory in previously 'safe' parliamentary seat of Heywood and Middleton.

UKIP polled just 600 votes short of Labour's winning candidate in the poll.

Elsewhere, UKIP won the seat of Clacton-on-Sea, securing their first elected MP.

Mr Miliband said the result showed : "A Tory party losing in their own backyard in Clacton and in retreat on what used to be their front line in the North West."
