Draft UK-EU deal 'falls so far short' - Tory MP Steve Baker

The draft deal on the UK's EU reform demands "falls so far short of what people want... it's a bit of a bad joke", Conservative MP Steve Baker has said.

Mr Baker, co-chairman of Conservatives for Britain, which is seeking an EU exit - told the Daily Politics the proposed "emergency brake" on migrants' benefits would not solve immigration pressures. The only solution, he said, was for Britain to leave the EU.

But Conservative MP Nick Herbert, from pro-EU group Conservatives for Reform in Europe, disagreed.

He said it was an "entirely false prospectus" that leaving the EU was the answer, saying Britain would still be subject to freedom of movement rules if it wanted access to the EU's single market.

Defending the renegotiation, he said David Cameron's approach was "pragmatic", "sensible" and addressed public concerns.
