'It is unwise to upset our trading relations in the Gulf'

Theresa May has defended her trip to Saudi Arabia, saying its ties with the UK are important for security and prosperity. The prime minister is facing questions about the UK's support for the Saudi-led coalition which is fighting rebels in neighbouring Yemen.

Sir William Patey, former British ambassador to Saudi Arabia, told the Today programme post Brexit Britain needs to be more careful about who it offends and says it would be "unwise to upset trading relationships in the Gulf".

Labour MP Ann Clywd, chair of the all party parliamentary group on human rights, argues that if Theresa May doesn't challenge her Saudi counterparts on Yemen then it is very clear she is "ready to sacrifice human rights".
