Paving the way for Edmund Hillary to conquer Everest
Events have been taking place to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the first conquest of Mount Everest.
The challenging terrain continues to inspire mountaineers even though there have been accusations that it has become too commercial.
The National Library for Scotland holds a huge number of maps of the mountain collected by the late Dr Michael Ward whose research laid the foundations for the successful ascent by Sir Edmund Hillary and sherpa Tensing Norgay.
