Scottish independence: 'Pound not an asset to be divided up,' says Osborne

Chancellor George Osborne has warned that an independent Scotland Could not keep the pound as part of a formal currency union with the UK.

In a speech in Edinburgh, Mr Osborne said: "The pound is not an asset to be divided up between two countries after a break-up as if it were a CD collection," and that a vote to leave the UK means leaving sterling.

He added: "A vote to leave the UK is also a vote to leave these unions and those transfers and those monetary arrangements; that's part of the choice the people of Scotland are being asked to make".

Mr Osborne went on to say the other political parties in Westminster, as well as the governor of the Bank of England, all supported this view.
