Longannet to close by March 2016 say Scottish Power

Scottish Power has announced that it will close Longannet power station, in Fife, by the end of March 2016.

The Fife plant is the second largest coal-fired power station in the UK has been in production since 1972 but the need to cut carbon emissions and the cost of connecting to the national grid has hastened the closure.

The company has also announced that it will abandon plans to build a new gas-fired power station at Cockenzie in East Lothian.
