George Osborne defends £500m Faslane investment

George Osborne has announced an investment of £500m in the Faslane navy base in a move that he says will secure 6,700 jobs on the site.

The chancellor defended the decision to make the announcement before parliament had voted on the renewal of the Trident nuclear submarines, which are based at the Clyde facility.

He said: "We are committed to replacing Britain's nuclear deterrent because these submarines represent our ultimate insurance policy and we've got to make decision now to keep our country safe."

The Scottish government said the renewal of Trident was the "wrong priority".
