Scotland considers adding folic acid to flour

The Scottish government is considering adding folic acid to flour as concern mounts that there could be an increase in birth defects whilst waiting for the UK government to make a decision.

Folic acid occurs naturally in dark green leafy vegetables and plays a crucial role in preventing birth defects such as spina bifida.

Health professionals are concerned that most women do not eat enough of the B vitamin to minimise the risks to their baby and have been calling for the move,

BBC Scotland health correspondent Eleanor Bradford reports.
