Varteg opencast plan 'breaks planning rules'

The Welsh government will be breaking its own planning rules, if it lets an application for an opencast mine go ahead in Torfaen, according to opponents of the plan.

Glamorgan Power wants to extract 350,000 tonnes of coal from Varteg Hill, near Blaenavon, Torfaen.

Opponents say the site is too close to housing and a school.

But the developers say the area would be improved in the long term if they get the green light.

Paul Heaney reports.
