Estyn report is dose of realism, says minister Huw Lewis

An inspection report calling for improvements in teaching standards in Wales provides a "dose of realism", Education Minister Huw Lewis has said.

Estyn's annual report raises concerns about the "variable" quality of teaching and standards generally, especially in secondary schools.

Mr Lewis said the report highlighted the priorities that needed to be addressed by the Welsh government, schools and local education authorities.

But he said improvements were already being seen at GCSE level, within primary schools and in tackling truancy.

The Welsh government said it was continuing to work on key areas such as teaching, literacy and numeracy.
