Deepcut: 'Confusion' over £1.3m Surrey Police review

The father of a soldier who died at Deepcut barracks 18 years ago said Surrey Police's decision to allocate £1.3m for a review of her death and that of three others was "confusing".

The money will pay for officers to provide evidence for the coroner if there is a new inquest into one death.

Pte Cheryl James was found dead in 1995 and an inquest recorded an open verdict.

Her father Des, from Llanymynech, Powys, said: "I'm not really sure what the announcement means because it's confusing because, what you have to remember, is that for 10 years Surrey Police absolutely, completely stonewall refused to give us anything.

"Then two years ago... when our legal team threatened high court action they immediately handed over the relevant files over a period of nine to 12 months.

"So we've had the information, we've had the files, they've assured us we've had everything and now they're talking about setting a budget to prepare the information to give us."
