Criticised Bridgend and Neath hospitals still improving

A series of spot checks at 20 hospitals across Wales found "no systemic issues of concern", according to a report prompted by criticisms of elderly patient care.

However, the report did find medicine management on wards needed improving.

The spot checks were ordered after a report following the neglect of Lilian Williams, 82, at two hospitals.

Investigators looked at medicine delivery, hydration, continence care and night-time sedation on 70 wards.

Chief nursing officer Prof Jean White said it was a reminder to staff to get the basic things right all the time.

"It's given us a snapshot of Wales as it was in the summer. I have assurance things to do with hydration, continence and making sure that people weren't over-sedated were done well in the majority of places."

BBC Wales health correspondent Owain Clarke asked her if Bridgend and Neath Port Talbot hospitals should now be "exemplars" for others following the critical Trusted To Care report, external earlier this year.
