'No room' in crime stats rules, says ACPO's Jeff Farrar

Police officers have "no room" under Home Office rules for deciding whether a complaint should be recorded as a crime, says a senior figure in the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO).

Yet a review by the Inspectorate of Constabulary has found that more than a quarter of sex offences reported to police in Wales and England are not being recorded.

It found that overall, almost one in five crimes is not officially counted.

Jeff Farrar, the Chief Constable of Gwent Police, who is also the lead for crime recording at ACPO, said there were a "number of reasons" why there were "inconsistencies" in the way police forces recorded crime statistics.

He spoke to Simon McCoy on BBC News Channel.
