Valley lines given 'game changing' electrification deal

A deal has been struck to electrify railway lines in the south Wales valleys after a row between the UK and Welsh governments over who should pay.

The UK government will pay to upgrade the Swansea-London mainline by 2018 at a cost of £850m, and will pay £125m towards electrifying the Valley lines.

The Welsh government will manage the Valley lines upgrade, estimated to cost between £309m and £463m.

Welsh Secretary Stephen Crabb said the deal would be "game changing" for the economy and people of south Wales.
