Calls to roll out BTEC for pupils losing interest at school

There are calls for a qualification to be rolled out to help young people at risk of losing interest in school.

Sweet - succeeding with education employment and training - is billed as a guide on how to be successful.

Targeting pupils in Year 9, the BTEC qualification is aimed at tackling so-called 'Neets' - those not in education, employment or training.

Its developer, Gwawr Booth, said some young people need a "penny-dropping moment" to realise the importance of education.

Jack Probert, 16, from St Mellons, Cardiff is enrolled on the scheme.
