Cystic fibrosis infection: 'We'll know much quicker'
Scientists at Cardiff University are using DNA testing by robots to help identify infections in cystic fibrosis patients more quickly and accurately.
There are more than 10,300 people with the condition in the UK.
Genetic testing for lung infections replaced the usual growth of samples in laboratory dishes for the project.
Researchers next want to see it used in public health laboratories and believe they could also help patients with other lung conditions and asthma.
Keen boxer Joe Tobin, 15, has had cystic fibrosis since he was a baby. He is also susceptible from infection, including pseudomonas which can lead to a condition similar to pneumonia.
He and his mother Anna explain what it is like - and how the new research might help.
