'Forgotten' Welsh instruments get a second life in Patagonia

Welsh musicians are jazzing up old instruments from people's attics to send to children thousands of miles away.

Members of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales are hoping to send six flight cases packed with donated violins, clarinets and guitars to Patagonia in time for Christmas.

The team of four were inspired to start the project after working with schools and youth groups during the orchestra's first visit last year to mark the 150th anniversary of the Welsh settlement.

Principal percussionist Chris Stock, who started the project, said school children were learning to play on toy glockenspiels and bongos made out of soil pipes.

"Bizarrely, a lot of them they make them themselves," he said.
