Radovan Karadzic: 'Serbs suffered in Sarajevo'

Former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic has attacked the treatment of Bosnian Serbs in Muslim areas of Sarajevo during the civil war in the 1990s.

Speaking as he begun his defence in his war crimes trial in The Hague, Mr Karadzic said that Serbs fled or hid in the city - in what was a demilitarized zone "only in theory" when under Bosniak (Bosnian Muslim) control.

He faces 10 charges of genocide, other war crimes and crimes against humanity during the war in the 1990s, including the 1995 massacre at Srebrenica.

He is also being prosecuted over the 44-month siege of Sarajevo, in which more than 12,000 civilians died.
