Australia's rivals in asylum pledges

There are less than 24 hours to go before Australians start voting for their next leader.

A number of issues divide the two rival parties, but both the Labor government and the opposition Liberal-National coalition have pledged tough measures to stop the flow of asylum seeker boats.

Opposition leader Tony Abbott said he would appoint a military commander to lead operations to tackle people smugglers and asylum boats.

Kevin Rudd unveiled a plan last month to send boat arrivals to Papua New Guinea, where those found to be genuine refugees would be resettled.
