Obama and Rouhani spoke on phone about nuclear issue

US President Barack Obama has spoken with Iran's Hassan Rouhani about the country's nuclear programme - the highest level contact between the two states since 1979.

Mr Obama said he had a telephone conversation with Mr Rouhani, during which they agreed to direct their teams to work towards an agreement on the nuclear issue.

Mr Obama said: "I believe we can reach a comprehensive solution."
