Queen's Baton Relay: Saving Dominica's 'Mountain Chicken'

Mark Beaumont, Presenter of the BBC's coverage of the Queen's Baton Relay, was lucky enough to witness a rare sight of nature in Dominica during the visit of the Queen's baton to the Caribbean island.

Mark and a crew were out filming at night with a conservation team from the Dominican Mountain Chicken Project who are tasked with saving a rare frog, known as the mountain chicken.

The population of the frog has plummeted from tens of thousands due to a fungal disease, called Chytridiomycosis, that has already wiped out over a hundred other amphibian species.

With only about 20 of these frogs known to be left on the island, Mark and the team found and tagged a 400g female. Each new discovery is an encouraging sign that the species may still have a future in the wild.
