Cuban flag raised in Washington as relations restored

On a stiflingly hot day in Washington in the US, a Cold War rivalry took another step towards reconciliation.

In a moment filled with history and symbolism, the Cuban flag was hoisted outside the country's reinstated embassy.

It marked the formal opening of Cuban and American embassies in their respective capitals, after half a century of animosity.
