South Sudanese vote in referendum to break from north

Polls are opening in southern Sudan where the four million registered voters are preparing to vote in an historic referendum that could see the country split in two.

The referendum is part of a peace deal that ended decades of conflict.

Voting is expected to last for a week and the results are widely expected to back southern independence from the north.
